Amazing. That’s the word that stayed with me after our time at Nguluko/Yuhu. What makes this guesthouse so unique isn’t just the elegant blend of Naxi tradition and modern design—it’s how that blend is alive and creates a very special experience! The owners still live in the original old house, with its untouched courtyard, while the guest rooms are in a beautifully designed, upscale brand new building. That mix of living heritage and quiet, five-star luxury is rare—and deeply touching. And then there’s the view. Looking out across the rooftops of Yuhu village to the majesty of Yulong Xueshan… it’s something I’ll never forget. I can highly recommend this place for anyone who looks for a very special rural experience with top comfort in a most beautiful surroundings.

Once in a while, we have the rare privilege of staying somewhere that exemplifies all that is good about travel. Nguluko is one such place. As the photos suggest, the hotel is beautifully designed. It’s a zen-like, modern annex, connected to Liusan’s generational home. What a curious privilege it is, to be able to join her family around the home’s traditional Naxi courtyard for a bonfire dance, before retreating upstairs to a room of luxurious comforts, including an actual Dyson hairdryer and electronic toilet. But more important is what the photos cannot capture. In an age of faceless travel, dominated by flavourless hotel chains and mass-produced group tours, it’s rare to be able to feel a connection with folks eager to share a little slice of their life with you. Whether it be a morning stroll around the old village, a sharing session on Naxi culture and Dongba script, or even the aforementioned bonfire dance (replete with lived-in details like the family’s aging hams dangling off the awnings), it harkens back to a more serendipitous style of travel that made me smile. Even meals (all-inclusive!) are a chance to experience local culture. Locally foraged bracken and morels make an appearance, as do different varieties of liangfen, and Lijiang-style baba. There’s also the most moreish chicken hotpot — which I was going to drive out of the way to Luguzhen to try — but which she ended up serving for dinner on the second night. I’m quite obsessive when it comes to food, and yet everything I wanted to try here, except perhaps the rainbow trout and yak, were cooked up and served. Some small things could be improved: many stairways lack railings for the mobility impaired, and the ‘October’ room has an odd bathroom design where the toilet cubicle barely has space to close when one is seated. But such issues pale in comparison to the overall experience. Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give it is that in a world filled with a million wonderful destinations, this is one place I would choose to return to.

Nguluko is probably the best B&B I have ever stayed in. It is welcoming, professional, warm, and has a cultural and historical heritage. The spatial design of the entire homestay is also unique, with black and gray walls echoing the snow-capped mountains, and locally picked plants used as decorations in public areas and rooms, which is very distinctive. The owner of the B&B, Liu San, treats every customer as seriously as she would treat her family. In the evening, she introduced us to the history of Lijiang and Naxi culture. We also learned Dongba script with her, which was very interesting and we gained a lot. In Dongba language, “Nguluko” means the foot of the snow-capped mountains, and Houyuan is our home at the foot of the snow-capped mountains in Lijiang. We were very lucky to stay in such a nice homestay on our first night in Lijiang. If we have the chance, we will definitely come again!

This is not an ordinary hotel review, but a letter of thanks to Liu San and all the staff of the inn. Last year, I went to a roadside restaurant in Yuhu Village and I still remember the red cake made by Liu Sanjia. This year I came here because of her inn, and only then did I realize that it is not just an inn, but also a living culture. The inn was built stone by stone by Liu San's younger brother. Liu San's grandfather was the assistant of George Forrest, a Ph.D. in botany. Listening to Liu San and any staff member in the hotel talk about the uses of various plants, they all sound very knowledgeable and it feels like taking a natural science class. Here, Dongba culture is no longer a tourist attraction but part of daily life. Sister Liu San would point to the couplets under the eaves and talk about the hieroglyphics, and talk about the Naxi people's dietary wisdom while eating. Watch her teach Niu Niu to recognize Dongba script and speak English. Cultural inheritance is in these daily lives. The Dongba script on the wall was written by local people, the spices used in the kitchen were collected from the back mountain, and even the pine branches used for burning have stories. The three days I stayed here were like reading a three-dimensional encyclopedia of the Naxi people. Coming here feels like visiting an old friend's home. You can deeply feel the attentiveness and meticulous care that Liu Sanjie and the staff (atmosphere group) give to every guest. If you are lucky, you may also meet Niu Niu, a 4-year-old Naxi kid who appears occasionally. He is a walking happy pill and his cute face alone can raise your emotional value to the maximum. We will see you soon~

It was so comfortable to come to Lijiang this month. It just rained a little when I came today. I particularly like Yuhu, a village at the foot of the mountain. I accidentally saw this hotel and booked it. The scenery on the way to the hotel is like a landscape painting. Makes you feel relaxed and happy The huge snow-capped mountains appeared before me. The hotel room is surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains It is said that it took 8 years from the design to the final presentation of this hotel. There are only 10 rooms in total, and each design is carefully crafted. I like this big living room with a very warm fireplace. We chatted with the host 63 around the fireplace at night. The friendly Xiao Lei and his friends gave us a home-like feeling, allowing me to do whatever I want without any sense of restraint. When you feel tired in the room, go to the living room for afternoon tea or a cup of coffee. When you feel tired and sleepy, you can go back to the room and take a nap. In the afternoon, you can go to the small corners of the village to take great photos. I like the small stone walls, green tiles, and stone roads. Living here really is like turning on vacation mode. I don't want to leave the hotel. The top floor has an unobstructed view 360 degrees, beautiful scenery everywhere Personally, I think this place is perfect for those who want to spend some quiet time with family, friends, or just be alone! Hygiene: Very clean Facilities: Perfect Environment: Beautiful Service: in place

This time I traveled to Yuhu Village in Lijiang. I was originally disappointed with the popular B&Bs on the Internet. I have been cheated several times by B&Bs that appeared in various Internet photos. After being recommended by a friend, I finally booked Houyuan in Yuhu Village. It really gave the trip a big surprise. The five-star hotel is exquisite yet exudes the warmth of home. I was worried that I would be bored in the mountains, but I ended up participating in the "Nature Class" at the homestay. After the walk, I was able to recognize several alpine plants. It was a pity that I didn't get to see the "Golden Mountain in the Sun" due to the weather, but it was really worth it to be able to quietly stare at the bottom of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and drink a cup of coffee. The predecessor of Houyuan was the "Xuesong Inn" in Yuhu Village founded in 1999. It was once a hidden B&B recommended by "Lonely Planet". In fact, it is the old courtyard next door and the owner's old house. I didn't pay any attention to it when I passed by during the day. In the evening, the owner took out several large albums of messages to introduce them to us. There were photos and letters from all over the world in them, which really amazed us. I had breakfast and dinner at the B&B. I think they were the two most comfortable meals I had this time. There was no excessive seasoning, but the ingredients were so good. Vegetables, tomatoes and chicken were all cooked in the simplest way, with the taste of childhood. In the restaurant, the boss kept feeding me and was always concerned about whether the amount was enough. Will come again, highly recommended!

A stay experience that far exceeded expectations, must recommend to everyone! I originally came here for the master's design, and when I heard that this was Li Xiaodong's masterpiece, it is indeed extraordinary! It is suitable for emptying your mind, and has a special aura that makes you relax and unwind. It feels like time has really stopped here. This stay experience was beyond my expectations. There is no need to think at all here, as food, accommodation, and entertainment are all arranged for you, and you can be fed at any time. I even had Matsutake rice noodles for breakfast. It’s so exciting to be able to eat Matsutake rice noodles in this season! The boss also took us to visit the Ten Thousand Camellias in Yufeng Temple, which is a must-see when visiting Lijiang this season. The 500-year-old camellia tree was full of large camellia flowers, which was really shocking. Finally, I would like to praise the housekeeper for her meticulous service. Not only did she wash my clothes in the washing machine, but she also folded them neatly when she returned them. It was so meticulous. This service is beyond words [strong] The design of Houyuan is impeccable, it is a masterpiece of a master. What is unexpected is that the management and service team also exceeded expectations and has great potential!

This time I stayed in a new hotel that opened not long ago - Houyuan, and I was deeply amazed! As soon as we arrived at the store, enthusiastic staff immediately came up to us and handed us hot towels and sweet fruit tea, which instantly increased our favorability. The design of Houyuan is truly unique, and every corner can be a great spot to view the snow-capped mountains. In the lobby, you can brew a pot of Dianhong tea, and as the tea aroma wafts around, you can take in the majestic snow-capped mountains; on the terrace, you can enjoy a romantic gaze at the snow-capped mountains in the breeze. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of the snow-capped mountains without having to travel long distances. The guest rooms are impeccable and decorated in a warm and elegant style. The soft and comfortable bedding, combined with the picturesque view outside the window, will make you intoxicated. Waking up in the morning to the sound of birdsong and sunshine, your body and mind are instantly healed. The food was the biggest surprise of this stay. The Naxi-style baba with applesauce and matsutake rice noodles for breakfast, the Naxi red cakes for afternoon tea, and the local chicken hotpot and cured pork ribs hotpot for dinner all have authentic flavors and fresh ingredients, and every bite is a treat for your taste buds. The nighttime activities are rich and interesting. At the bonfire party, put on Naxi costumes and dance with friends, having fun and excitement. You can also decipher Dongba hieroglyphs, feel the unique charm of ancient characters, and experience the mystery and novelty of Dongba culture. Houyuan's service is meticulous and can always meet your needs inadvertently. This is not only a place to stay, but also a spiritual home full of beautiful memories. Next time I go on vacation, Houyuan will still be my first choice!
